Silver is used on The Traitors to depict lump sums of money, that will eventually be awarded to a season's winners.
In De Verraders (Netherlands) and a few other versions, the total prize fund is simply described in terms of silver bars, whereas in most other versions, each silver bar is specified to have a certain monetary value. The choice of silver bars for the prize fund has not been fully explained by the creators, but there at least three plausible reasons for doing so:
- To establish a quantifiable denominator for Mission payouts
- To contribute to the show's treasure-seeking/mysterious aesthetic
- To obfuscate the relatively low prize fund from winning
Despite the use of silver bars, the prize fund is paid out to contestants in money, even when not explicitly stated on-screen.[1] The exact value of each silver bar typically depends on the market price for silver during production, and can thus fluctuate, although silver bars are stated to be purely representative in some cases, rather than tied to an actual market price.
For The Traitors (UK) and The Traitors (US), gold coins are instead used to depict the prize fund, primarily for representative purposes since there is no known fixed value assigned to each gold coin.
