Os Traidores is the Portuguese edition of the global franchise The Traitors. It is the 11th edition of the show to launch globally, with its first episode airing on April 9, 2023.
History[]
A Portuguese edition of The Traitors was first announced by Portuguese TV station SIC on January 25, 2023, with the station intending to position it as a marquee competitor to rival TVI's O Triângulo, which shared many similarities with Big Brother (also on TVI with the same host).[1] It was later reported that the project was initially developed for a streaming service but subsequently dropped, and SIC's Director of Programs Daniel Oliveira stepped in to acquire the format.[2]
The show was initially scheduled to launch against O Triângulo on February 26, 2023, but this was pushed back alongside the announcement of American-Portuguese actor Daniela Ruah as the show's host on February 17, 2023.[3] Filming for the first season took place during March 2023, primarily in the Montebelo Historic Hotel attached to the Mosteiro de Alcobaça.[4] A trailer for the show was released on March 29, 2023,[5] confirming its launch on Easter Sunday - April 9, 2023.
The show launched with strong ratings, but saw its audience fell week after week despite the good reception. It was heavily speculated to be cancelled on May 22, 2023.[6] However, there has been no further official confirmation on SIC's plans for the program.
