Murder is an important segment of gameplay in The Traitors. In all versions of the game, they serve one purpose: To allow Traitors to eliminate one of the Faithfuls in the game.
Missions are typically scheduled in the late part of an elimination cycle, after Banishment but before a Breakfast the next day. There is normally one Murder per elimination cycle, although sometimes there is a Recruitment or On Trial (or a bonus Missions in The Traitors (Australia)/Season 1) as an alternative for the Traitors.
Mechanics[]
Murders will either take place on the Traitors' Tower, Well, or Conclave. The Traitors will walk one by one or together and are unhooded, revealing their faces to the remaining Traitors. They will then discuss the situation and decide to put up two, three, or even four Faithfuls for Murder and their reasoning for why. Once the Traitors have decided who will be Murdered, they will write that Faithful name on a letter: "Dear _____, by the Order of the Traitors, you have been murdered. Sign, the Traitors," which they will then fold, pour wax on, seal and deliver to a host (or an unseen crew member), which will then be placed in the Confessional for the Murdered Faithful to read.
If the murdered player has a Shield, the murder is null and void, and is not refunded.
As was revealed in the Videoland Edition of De Verraders in 2022, Traitors can murder themselves, and it is also averted if the Traitor has a Shield, in effect wasting a day. However, the Traitor who attempted this, Thijs Zeeman, was quickly found out and banished.
Seasons like The Traitors (UK)/Series 1, Forræder (Norway)/Season 3, and Az Árulók/Season 1 also give the Traitors a Murder in Plain Sight, where instead of going to a conclave, they will go to a dinner party with the remaining Faithfuls and instructed by the host to give one of the Faithfuls a "poisoned" drink, a kiss on the cheek, or a "deadly" hug, marking them for Murder the next day.
