Mosteiro de Alcobaça (English: Alcobasa Monastery) is a Gothic church and former monastery in Alcobaça, in central Portugal. Opening in 1232, it closed as a monastery during the 1834 Portuguese dissolution of the monasteries. Since 2015 a renovated part of the building has operated as a luxury hotel.
It is the filming location for Os Traidores.
History[]
The monastery was founded in 1178, with monks originally living in wood houses and moving into the main monastery some 35 years later. The church itself was not completed until 1252. The church is one of Portugal's earliest examples of Gothic architecture. The monks created a collation of Portugal's earliest history, and the library was one of the largest in Portugal until it was pillaged by invading French armies in 1810 and many books were stolen in anti-clerical riots in 1834. What remains of the library's collection is now kept in the Portuguese National Library in Lisbon.
After the riots, the dissolution of the monasteries of Portugal in 1834 saw the last monks move out. In 1907 it was protected as a national monument, and was declared one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Since 2015, part of the monastery has been used as a luxury hotel.
