Ardross Castle is a filming location in Ardross, Highland, United Kingdom for The Traitors, featured prominently and subsequently attaining global recognition in The Traitors (UK) and The Traitors (US).

History[]

A hunting lodge was first built on what constituted the current castle grounds in the late 1700s by the first Duke of Sutherland. The property was later sold to merchant Sir Alexander Matheson in 1845, who sought to develop the estate for agricultural purposes. Land was reclaimed and leased out for this purpose, with architect Alexander Ross commissioned to build what is now known as Ardross Castle in a Scots Baronial style, incorporating the earlier building while adding about 30 more rooms, at a cost of £7,000 then.

After Sir Alexander's death, the estate was then sold to C. W. Dyson Perrins, an heir to the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce brand who further expanded and modernised it. The estate was eventually broken up and sold in 1937, with the core property purchased by Mr & Mrs Austin Mardon, who lived there until 1983 before selling it to the McTaggart family, who began refurbishing it for commercial use as a wedding and filming location.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Castle does not have lodgings for overnight accommodation, even though The Traitors (US) films the show in a way that gives the illusion contestants are sleeping in it (they in fact slept in Inverness instead). However, there are rooms where host Alan Cumming and the contestants could rest in during the day.[2] The Traitors (UK) more explicitly shows contestants leaving the Castle at night.
